About

I'm Jason Tickle. I serve as CEO of Central Rappahannock River Habitat for Humanity, where I run a rural housing program — families building their own homes, side by side. I'm a Class A contractor by trade, I've spent about fifteen years in nonprofit housing, and I'm a frequent guest on radio and podcasts and a regular speaker at regional, state, and national housing conferences.

I'm a Christian. I choose to walk by faith, and I have never regretted it. Traveling around the world — including a semester living in Jerusalem in 2007 — has shaped my view, and made me realize how blessed I am to live in the USA. Walking by faith means I'm always learning. That's what this site is: my journey.

Reason with a View is where I think out loud — faith, housing, history, music, the night sky, and the policies that shape the world at every level. The thoughts and opinions here are my own. They don't speak for my employer or anybody else.

How this blog gets written

Every post here starts with me — an idea, a question, something I've been turning over. I use an AI assistant to help me think it through, check the facts, and get the words down. The thoughts are mine, the voice is mine, and nothing goes up until I've read it and said so.

A note on recommendations

From time to time I recommend things I actually use. Some of those links are Amazon Associate links, and as an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. It never changes what I recommend.

Buy me a coffee

Reason with a View is free to read. If a post was worth your time and you'd like to chip in, you can buy me a coffee — $5, handled securely through Stripe. Entirely optional, and always appreciated.

Speaking

I speak to churches, civic groups, and conferences — usually about housing, faith, and building community. To book me as your next speaker, email Jasonticklelive@gmail.com and we'll work out the details.

The Truth About Conspiracy Theories

Image
"Conspiracy theory." Say it out loud and watch what happens. It used to be just a description — a theory about a conspiracy. Now it's an insult, a way to end a conversation instead of having one. But the phrase is older than you think. It dates back to the 1860s, when it meant exactly what it sounds like. It only became a slur after World War II. And here's a bit of irony for you: there's a popular theory that the CIA invented the term as a weapon to discredit people who doubted the official story of the JFK assassination. Historians checked. The memo exists, but it doesn't say what people claim it says, and there's no evidence it changed how anyone talked. The conspiracy theory about the phrase "conspiracy theory" is itself a conspiracy theory — and a wrong one. That's the thing about this whole universe. Most of it is wrong. The moon landing happened. Vaccines don't cause autism — that one came from a fraud who lost his medical license....

The Verdict Before the Trial

Image
Here's something I've been turning over in my head: we don't react to words. We react to what we think the words are accusing us of. Take "entitlement." Same Social Security check, same government, same retiree who worked forty years. Call it an earned benefit and they nod along. Call it an entitlement and you've just told them they're living off everybody else. Nothing changed but the word — and the word changed everything. Or tell a parent they're spoiling their kid. You might've meant it as a passing observation about boundaries. What they heard was: you're a bad parent. The wall goes up before the sentence is finished. Or take "cult" and "church." Same level of devotion, same Sunday commitment, same potlucks. One word honors it. The other says something's wrong with you. The speaker picks the word. The listener feels the verdict. That's the pattern: the label is the argument. By the time you're debating the f...

Breaking the Cycle: What Saul and Jonathan Teach Us About Family

Image
Every kid wants their parents' approval. That's not weakness, it's wiring. We want the people who brought us into the world to be proud of us. We want to honor them and carry what they built forward. But what do you do when the road your parents are on leads straight off a cliff? Psychologists talk about generational trauma now — how addiction, rage, and self-destruction get handed down like some unwanted inheritance. But thousands of years before anyone had a name for it, the Old Testament gave us one of the clearest pictures of it ever recorded: King Saul and his son Jonathan. Saul started with everything going for him. But his insecurity and disobedience curdled into paranoia, and eventually his whole life narrowed down to a single obsession: killing David. And Jonathan was the prince — the heir. In any normal family, his job was simple: stand with his father, fight his father's enemies, take the throne one day. Saul demanded exactly that kind of blind loyalty. When...
